The modern society is grappling with issues that are unprecedented, in certain cases. While people of the medieval society dealt with disease outbreaks, wars and conquests, they did not recognize mental states to be of any consequence. If anything, people were expected to be at the best psychologically and not talk about their problems. The modern world has however brought to the fore issues that were previously thrown under the rug. Mental health has become an important facet in the modern society. Employment, unemployment, globalization, technology and social media, among other factors, have become stress triggers. Stress can be a good thing. It is the level at which an individual’s abilities are exposed, only if they have the right mental capacity to deal with the stress. A troubled person is likely to crumble in the face of stress.

The modern society is prone to depression and negative stress. The actuality of life depends on the soundness of mind and not the availability of everything. People from different walks of life, social class, race, religion and sex are driven by different goals, achievement of which can be inhibited by their mental state. Depression is not a prediction of social class or profession. Studies show that one’s past can determine their state of mind, although not always. The increase in available information has resulted in increased cases of depression and reduced empathy among young people. The problem is not so much the information available more so the use of which. The ability to deal with depression depends on an individual’s capacity to handle negative situations. Thus, a sum up of external factors that prove difficult for a person to handle could cause them to be in a depressive state. The modern society continues to fail in addressing these factors due to the fact that they have a low level of psychological self-regulation, for instance communicating, recognizing the problem or even listening to music, often resorting to denial, avoidance, and coping strategies that are negative. Psychological self-regulation, be it communication or logic and reasoning functions to strengthen the ability to deal with stress and eventual avoidance of depression.
